The Best Laid Plans...

Plans can change in a matter of minutes! Dear Husband slipped and fell on his right shoulder last Friday. On Monday his doctor sent him to get an MRI. On Tuesday as we were packing for our getaway to México we got the bad news: rotator cuff surgery required. Flights and casa were cancelled...so here we are, still in our own casa in St. Paul. We missed the beginning of the winter season in Mazatlán, México because I was recovering from rotator cuff surgery and now we're missing the latter half because of Jim's surgery and recovery. Since his pain is increasing, we made the right decision rather than toughing it out in another country. So from now on, go back to my other blog, Visual St. Paul, and I'll try to post some scintillating Minnesota photos for you!

Since I had the bottom two already scheduled for Mazatlán, I'll leave them on the blog to let you see what we're missing!!

This is a view of Icebox Hill taken on the Malecon, a walk that follows along the ocean for miles. Our casa is located a short distance away, almost at the base of the hill...just a short climb. Below is a photo of our casa, not ours but wish it were!! And I wish we were there...but another year, another time!!

ABC WEDNESDAY-"H": Haute Cuisine: Te Amo Lucy...here we come!!

As you read this we're probably on our way to Mazatlán from St. Paul, MN USA on Sun Country Airlines. After arrivial and getting settled we'll walk over to our favorite restaurant, Te Amo Lucy. I haven't been there for over a year so it will be wonderful to taste Lucy's outstanding cooking again!!

And here on the repost photo which you may have missed before is the lovely lady, Lucy, who serves outstanding food learned from her México City abuela.

Theme Day, February, 2011-Fountains

Does the water have to be running to qualify as a fountain? I don't think so! This beautiful fountain is in the courtyard of the Melville in the heart of El Centro, Mazatlan, Mexico. If you went to go to this boutique hotel, this is how it is described on their website:

If you want to savour history to the full in Mazatlán, The Melville is the place to stay. Built in neoclassical style during the 1870´s by Spanish trader Juan Tamés it served as the Telegraph Office in the 19th Century. Later it functioned, for more than 60 years, as a Carmelite nun's school, a period that gave the Melville its monastic appearance. Today it operates as a luxury guest house " A palace for Pesos ."

Named after Herman Melville, who was in Mazatlan in 1844, the building impresses with its wrought Iron Balcony that goes all around it. Inside, you not only find the best of Mexican decoration, a tribute to local craftsmen, but Peruvian Sacral art as well. Mexico and Peru were the richest Spanish colonial possessions, and had large Carmelite orders. The nuns in Mazatlán had ample contact with their Peruvian Counterparts, and therefore the art collection.

No rooms at the Melville are alike. In one you sit on a majestic deep plush armchair, In another hangs a splendid oil painting. Here you find costly antiques, gleaming mirrors, decrepit trunks and Mexican chandeliers. All of this makes The Melville perhaps Mexico 's loveliest habitable museum.

A Magical View

When we lived in Mazatlán during the winter months, the view from the terrace both day and night was spectacular. Watching the cruise ships arrive in the morning and then depart at night, sitting in a chair either under the sun or enjoying the cool night air was very enjoyable.

Another Day at the Beach

Stone Island is my favorite beach in Mazatlán. After a short boat ride, the beaches, coconut grove and many restaurants, especially Lety's and Carmelita's, offer a pleasant, relaxing day. The many vendors are a constant presence, but they're polite and friendly without being aggressive. I'd like to buy one of everything from them because their work is hard and arduous.

I love going to the area where the fisherman and their boats are kept. Watching the activity in the area gives me a different feel for the city. The boats they use are called pangas. Here is a brief description of them: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia...

The Panga is the Central American/Mexican version of a skiff. The term "Panga" was used historically for any small boat other than dugout canoes. Today it usually refers to an open "semi-dory" type skiff. Pangas form the backbone of the small-scale fishing effort in Mexico, Central America and much of the Caribbean.

Pangas are usually between 19 and 28 feet in length, with capacities ranging from 1 to 5 tons and powered by outboard motors of between 45hp and 200hp. They are planing hulls capable of speeds in excess of 35 knots.

The hulls are made of Fiberglass or FRP, heavily reinforced by numerous bulkheads and usually have bow and stern enclosed flotation compartments.

In the hands of an experienced operator they are considered extremely seaworthy. Most pangas are expected to have a working life of between 5 to 10 years if properly maintained.

One of the best things about the Mexican culture is the way I have observed that children are treated. They are included in almost all activities, and I see them everywhere: in restaurants, in the plazas, at family gatherings, and many other public places. No-one has refused me when I asked if I could take a picture. Beautiful, isn't she?!

Isla is a shelter dog who was adopted by a resident of Stone Island, Mazatlán, México. She spends her day roaming the beach, visiting residents and sunbathing tourists until her owner comes to collect her and take her home. When she was in the shelter my husband who volunteers there often walked her. When we recently went to the beach to relax, sunbathe and eat good food, Isla recognized him and spent the day with us. My son is flying from Minnesota to Mazatlán to visit for a week, arriving on the fourth of April. One of the favorite activities for some people, but not for me, is to hike up to the lighthouse on that very steep hill. I'm going to challenge him to hike to El Faro. Do you think he'll do it?

The church of San Jose (known in Mazatlán as a "temple"), located on a rise of land at the foot of an area called Icebox Hill, is said to be the oldest church in the city, built in 1837 and completed 5 years later. The beautiful mosaic background and statues form a side altar in the small church, and the bottom photo is the main altar, made of wood.

After the performance at the Orfanatorio de Mazatlán, the audience was treated to tapas and beverages. The younger children presented floral bouquets to the performers and the older children served the crowd with trays of the tapas.

There is a small group of expats in Mazatlán, México who trap abandoned street and feral cats, take each to a local vet for health care and neutering after which they release the animals. Their ears are marked for identification. Like many cities, these undomesticated cats breed and produce many animals that continue the cycle. Too often the cats suffer diseases and crippling accidents but, if they're lucky, they are trapped and given a new lease on life by members of this group. I have participated with this group and went along for a photo shoot. I snapped these cats who had been neutered and are often fed by neighbors or individuals in the expat group who live here year long. It's a big job!! To see more CAMERA CRITTERS, Click here.

In March of every year the Orfanatorio de Mazatlán has a fund raiser, a musical program held in the courtyard of the orphanage. For the past four years we have attended and have never been disappointed. We have been treated to operatic arias, classical symphony, and jazz. This year the program was a flamingo fiesta. The dancing was fantastic and the dancers were both gifted and gorgeous. At the end of the program, some of the children joined the audience for tapas and beverages. I'll show your more pictures in the coming days.

While eating at an outdoor foodstand last week we met a delightful 3-generation family: the grandparents, young uncle, and father from Australia and the mother from Mazatlan. (I imagine the baby has dual citizenship.) Because we seem to frequent and congregate in many of the same places and also because the Mazatlan expat and tourist community is really pretty small, we again met them in the Plaza a few days later (minus grandfather this time). I was delighted that they agreed to pose for a photo.

Once a year a friend of mine brings Oaxaca weavers to Canucks in Mazatlan to sell their beautiful weavings. The woman I featured yesterday is one of the artisans. I bought a purse for myself and one for my daughter's birthday. Because of the airline's luggage weight restrictions, I can't bring home one of these beautiful rugs. Perhaps one of these days we'll drive so I can load up the car with this kind of treasures!!

There's a tale to be told here! On Tuesday afternoon the main road in Zona Dorada was blockaded by women whose homes are to be removed for a federal project. As I understand it, casas in 6 villages and small towns have been purchased by the government as part of eminent domain for the building of a dam. Women from these villages were protesting both the project and the unfair, small amount of remuneration they received for the abandonment of their homes and property. Spokeswomen were there handing out information about the protests. Most motorists in the long lines were sympathetic, but one woman was visibly angry and tried to bull her way throught the blockade...to no avail and to the jeers of the crowd. Other motorists used the opportunity to use their cell phones, probably to inform friends and family about the situation in which they found themselves. The bystanders watching the protest supported the women as far as I could tell.

Lori and Chuy are our friendly next-door neighbors, and lucky for us, Lori has a food stand a few blocks away. She's an excellent cook and serves typical Mexican food which is devoured by appreciative fans, both natives and gringos. We like being able to eat economically, spending usually about 6 USD for both of our meals. Plus the food is delicious!!

The Museo de Arte hosted Adriano del Sal, a classical guitarist who was one of the featured musicians in the International Guitar Festival. The one hour performance was held in an open courtyard on a warm evening, attended by an audience of appreciative music lovers. It was fascinating to watch him play and a pleasure to hear this talented young man.

This dog, unlike too many strays out roaming the streets, lives in a lovely home and is obviously well-maintained and secure. He peered out at me as I walked by, but retreated when I stopped with my camera at-the-ready. When I approached him, he left the window, but then curiosity got the better of him, and he returned. We played this little game for awhile, but then I went on my way. I'll have to go back again to see him to see if he recognizes me.

Because my 100 Strangers Project is also on Flickr, I often post the photographs at different times; consequently, I sometimes get confused...imagine that! Earlier I had skipped the three that I have posted today on CDP so here they are, out of sequence, but they have arrived: Tina was a stranger but now she is a friend since we're both involved in two groups together: volunteering in the library and taking care of stray animals. Manuel is a vendor in one of the souvenir shops in Zona Dorada, and Don with the flowing beard is a frequent patron of the English Reading Library. Whew! Now I'm caught up.

Gabrielle is a 19-year-old student attending a local college in Mazatlan, Mexico. While I was reading in the Plaza on a warm and sunny day, she approached me and asked if she could practice her English by interviewing me. I gladly agreed to help her with her class assignment. When she was finished, I turned the tables and then interviewed her for my 100 strangers project. She is a refined and gentle young woman who is majoring in science.

Several days a week from our terrace we can see the cruise ships when they dock in the channel miles away, arriving at 6am and then departing between 5:30 and 6pm on the same day. Watching them is fascinating because these behemoths can turn on a dime as well as move swiftly through the water. The wharf area is a city in itself with every kind of shop and service imaginable; however, instead of remaining in the immediate area, most passengers hustle off the ship, ride into El Centro or Zona Dorada, spending the day looking at local culture and spending money in souvenir shops or the central mercado. A lucky few find Stone Island which is a paradise of thatched roof restaurants and a sandy beach along the shoreline. One night this ship left just a little behind schedule which is rare since their arrivals and departures are dependable as clockwork. The lighted Cathedral's spires and the ship's lights made a spectacular scene.

Because of the deterioration of El Centro in the 20th Century, and despite recent efforts of new home owners to restore the historical buildings, there are still many structures that are in need of TLC (and lots of renovation effort!). The house in the top photo has captured my imagination. Despite its current neglected condition (broken shutters and windows, crumbling cement, rusted iron work, trashed interior, and garbage-strewn courtyard), I love the building! If only I had been able to see it and visit it at the turn of the century! I seldom miss an opportunity to walk by and wonder at its past glory. If I ever win the lottery, my first purchase and effort will be to restore lovingly this place, and y'all will be invited to visit!!

On Friday evenings during the month of February, students in the Youth Musicians Program at Iglesia Christiana perform at 6pm. The youngest members play first, and these young chicos are first year students. Some of the older students were there to assist the younger ones plus play and perform their own music selections, too.

Parker from Portland, Oregon was passing through Mazatlán on his way to Panama when I encountered him on the street in front of the English Reading Library. Parker has been travelling for four months and will continue 'til he said, "My money runs out." He has plenty of gear on his bicycle, and he was looking for youth hostel. Hope he makes it all the way to Panama!!

When I was still in Minnesota and posting from my VisualStPaul blog, I decided to participate in Flickr's group that approached strangers to photograph. The objective was to become more comfortable asking someone you don't know for a photograph and also to perfect your technique in the process. I decided to resume the project on this blog also, and I will occasionally post a photo of a stranger with information about them.

We met Kela and her novio (boyfriend) in a store in Zona Dorado when Jaime was looking to buy Cuban cigars. Manuel was the primary clerk who typically made a hard sell while Kela sat demurely on the side. Before I photographed her, he nodded approval. We had an interesting chat about the current state of business and the economics re. tourist trade. Jaime incidentally left with 3 cigars.

The two little girls obviously are our neighbors. They knocked on the door and asked if they could get their "balloon" off our roof. The little one on the upper rung of the spiral steps was quite giggly. Although they were reluctant to speak much English, I suspect that it's better than my Spanish! We hope to see them again in the neighborhood.

On March 26, 2007 I published the lower left photo from guest photographer and friend, Roger Evert. The young men of Mazatlan are still diving from this platform, a risky business. Last week while strolling the Malecon I saw another young man poised on the platform, and I took the top photo right after he dove into the ocean. He safely emerged and then climbed to the top to do it all over again. A dangerous display to earn pesos from impressed tourists.

The Twins

While in Mazatlán I volunteer at the English Reading library and Jaime volunteers at Amigos de los Animales. Both of us are involved with fund raisers to relieve the lives of stray street animals. Interested animal lovers who live and visit here help, for example, by capturing strays (often bedraggled, sick, neglected, and frightened), taking them to vets, neutering, and, in the case of cats, releasing the animals after the surgery. One individual has, in addition, provided a "kitty orphanage" on the roof of her apartment building. If she had not found them, rescued them, and provided for their health and well-being, these twins certainly would have died. She now has 11 orphans, hoping that some people will adopt each one.

This is another painting that I particularly like. Another friend of mine owns similar versions of yesterday's and today's paintings, and has become a collector of Loretta Gallacci's artwork.

I have many favorite paintings, but this one is special because it is so typical of the streets in El Centro. This is one of Loretta Gallacci's paintings.

From November to May on the First Fridays of the month, several artists open their studios from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in El Centro Mazatlán, México. These oil paintings are in a studio belonging to a artist friend of mine, Loretta Gallacci. Come back to see my favorite paintings on Monday and Tuesday.

The Potter

During Carnaval in Mazatlan many activities take place in and around the Plaza Machado, the focal point of downtown El Centro. While buying our tickets at the box office for one of the musical evenings at the Angela Peralta Theatre, we noticed this man, giving a display of his art form. Quite a crowd had gathered to watch him. Did any of you guess what he was doing when I introduced you to him last Wednesday?

Thursday Night Entertainment

There are lots of different kinds of entertainment in Mazatlán: fine restaurants, street food carts, sports bars, cinemas, theatres, night clubs and many others. Our favorite restaurant, Te Amo Lucy, has a special Thursday night show...old episodes of The Twilight Zone!! This is where we'll spend part of our evening while eating Lucy's delicious food (or the special sandwich...the price is in pesos, not US$).

Cathedral

The top photo is a side view of the main Cathedral in El Centro as seen in the distance from my terrace. The small photo is a partial view of the front of the Cathedral. "This large 19th-century cathedral, right in the heart of Old Mazatlán, has high, yellow twin towers, a dramatic interior and some beautiful statues. Built from 1875 to 1890, it faces the Plaza Principal, which has lush trees and a bandstand." (from The Lonely Planet website)

Angel Flores

Angel Flores is a street with an incline that is not as steep as some of the other calles which are nearby on Icebox Hill. It's a midget compared with the killer hill on the final block to mi casita. I'll be in great shape when I return home, though! Many of the flower boxes on this street, unfortunately, are empty. When all the boxes are filled and when the flowers are in bloom against the stone wall, the street is a wonderfully beautiful sight. The smaller photo gives you an idea of the blossoms when in bloom and in abundance.

Although this looks like a Baja ferry carrying only freight, there are passenger ferries available if you want to book PASSAGE! Baja Ferries was established in 1999 because there was an increased demand from companies like Wallmart and Costco for a modern shipping route between mainland Mexico and Baja California. Smaller companies with mixed success had preceeded it, going in and out of business, but this private company looks like it's here to stay.

Because we will be enroute from St. Paul to Mazatlán and busy getting established, I might not be able to immediately restart this blog on Day 1, which is why I am posting the Theme Day early. Hurry back so I can show you Mazatlán, my Paradise!

I have many favorite Mazatlan photos and it was difficult to choose, but I selected this one because it shows the beauty of the people. The Angela Peralta Theatre where I took this photo is a favorite staging ground for bridal couples. We are snowbirding in Mazatlan from January 31-April 30th this year when I will again resume taking snapshots of this wonderful city. FOG and the FARO

Fog: A hydrometeor consisting of a visible aggregate of minute water droplets (or ice crystals), suspended in the atmosphere near the Earth's surface. According to international definition, fog reduces visibility below one kilometer. Fog differs from cloud only in that the base of fog is at the Earth's surface while clouds are above the surface. Our Spanish class ended today, and we celebrated our successes and our friendships with a fiesta--of course!! A diverse group we came from different points on the globe: (Top row, left to right: Hector, our much loved instructor-México, Bill-Chicago, recently retired from England, Rollie-Minneapolis, MN. and part-time resident in Mazatlán, and Barry-México and resident of many far flung places; Bottom row, left to right: Kate, Minnesota Snowbird, Cathy and Agatha, Newfoundland. We were very compatible and consequently enjoyed quality friendships, despite our short-term relationship. Perhaps we can gather for many reunions!

I have made a number of canine friends since we've been here. This German-German Shepherd (a bit smaller than other Shepherds) is owned by someone I met here in Mazatalán. Isn't she a beauty?!

I thought that the celebrations of semana santa would cease on Easter Sunday. Nope! The beaches were still full and the malecon was still filled with spectators and roving automobiles. Later in the evening, however, the streets turned to normal.

In Honor of Abigail Taylor, Age 6

I need to interrupt my regular Mazatlán posts to honor this little girl, who just died on Thursday evening, March 20. As some of you know, I live in the Twin Cities, St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. but I have been spending the winter here. "Abigail was injured when she sat on a pool drain, and its powerful suction ripped out part of her intestinal tract on June 29. She underwent transplant surgery in December at the Nebraska hospital to receive a new small bowel, liver and pancreas." (Home: Omaha News) No, I don't know the child or the family, but I was filled with horror when it occurred last June and have followed the ongoing story. As a mother and now a grandmother of a little girl the same age, I have been deeply affected by this tragic incident and the terrible impact it has had on this family. I am filled with sorrow and grieve for the child, her parents, and siblings. For more information, click here.

I live in Abigail's neighborhood in Edina, Minnesota, and our beautiful city's streets are lined with thousands of luminaries in honor of Abbey tonight. Her visitation was at a local funeral home, and afterward, her family felt the support of this community as they made their way through Edina's neighborhoods amidst the thousands of lights shining for Abbey. It is beautiful and touching. Abbey's life and death have affected so many ... and her light shines bright tonight. She won't be forgotten! Thank you for caring ...

Semana Santa

Semana Santa (Holy Week) is an interesting and unusual experience for foreigners. Solemnity is the prevailing attitude with religious rituals predominating in my culture. I'm sure that this is important to Mexicans also, but the atmosphere here is charged with gaity and fiestas! The beach is just beginning to fill up and traffic on the Malecon in front of our condo is already bumper to bumper, with every indication that there is more to come! I understand daytime on the beach, but cars are bumper to bumper on the road at night. I can't figure out where they're going and why!

The Taco Ladies

Part of the fun for those who attended the Meow Mixer was being able to eat the food made by the Taco Ladies. They arrived with part of the food pre-prepared, but made the tacos on a portable grill so we could see the process. The precision with which just the right amount of dough was used fascinated me--not a gram more or less than was needed as each ball of dough was rapidly slapped on the grill. The tacos were perfect and the fillings and vegetables were delicious!

We invite you to come visit another restaurant with us! Topolo's on the corner of Constitutión and Benita Juarez is another place where Jaime and I like to eat. The open courtyard that you see in the photo enhances the ambiance. The service is excellent and the food is well-presented, served with white or red wine. Come along with me and try the Maki-Maki either in mango sauce or limón! You'll find it very delicious!
