Strong, beautiful women!

About 10-12 years ago I met Susan and Jan who were instrumental in organizing volunteers to help animals in Mazatlán.  Their program to trap, neuter and release feral cats, for example has grown by leaps and bounds.  On Monday night I attended their well-organized annual benefit, BowWowMeow fundraiser,  to further assist the animals here.  A great time.  Great women!!

As you are reading this I probably am on the plane from St. Paul, MN to Mazatlán.  Until I get settled in my rented condo on the Malecon, I will use photos from my archive from previous visits. I hope that we will arrive on schedule so we can watch the parade today and take photos. Come back!!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!!

The Best Laid Plans...

Plans can change in a matter of minutes!  Dear Husband slipped and fell on his right shoulder last Friday.  On Monday his doctor sent him to get an MRI.  On Tuesday as we were packing for our getaway to México we got the bad news: rotator cuff surgery required.  Flights and casa were cancelled...so here we are, still in our own casa in St. Paul.  We missed the beginning of the winter season in Mazatlán, México because I was recovering from rotator cuff surgery and now we're missing the latter half because of Jim's surgery and recovery.  Since his pain is increasing, we made the right decision rather than toughing it out in another country.  So from now on, go back to my other blog, Visual St. Paul, and I'll try to post some scintillating Minnesota photos for you! 

Since I had the bottom two already scheduled for Mazatlán, I'll leave them on the blog to let you see what we're missing!!

This is a view of Icebox Hill taken on the Malecon, a walk that follows along the ocean for miles. Our casa is located a short distance away, almost at the base of the hill...just a short climb.  Below is a photo of our casa, not ours but wish it were!! And I wish we were there...but another year, another time!!

ABC WEDNESDAY-"H": Haute Cuisine: Te Amo Lucy...here we come!!

As you read this we're probably on our way to Mazatlán from St. Paul, MN USA on Sun Country Airlines.   After arrivial and getting settled we'll walk over to our favorite restaurant, Te Amo Lucy.  I haven't been there for over a year so it will be wonderful to taste Lucy's outstanding cooking again!!

And here on the repost photo which you may have missed before is the lovely lady, Lucy, who serves outstanding food learned from her México City abuela.

Theme Day, February, 2011-Fountains

Does the water have to be running to qualify as a fountain?  I don't think so!  This beautiful fountain is in the courtyard of the Melville in the heart of El Centro, Mazatlan, Mexico. If you went to go to  this boutique hotel, this is how it is described on their website:

If you want to savour history to the full in Mazatlán, The Melville is the place to stay. Built in neoclassical style during the 1870´s by Spanish trader Juan Tamés it served as the Telegraph Office in the 19th Century. Later it functioned, for more than 60 years, as a Carmelite nun's school, a period that gave the Melville its monastic appearance. Today it operates as a luxury guest house " A palace for Pesos ." 

Named after Herman Melville, who was in Mazatlan in 1844, the building impresses with its wrought Iron Balcony that goes all around it. Inside, you not only find the best of Mexican decoration, a tribute to local craftsmen, but Peruvian Sacral art as well. Mexico and Peru were the richest Spanish colonial possessions, and had large Carmelite orders. The nuns in Mazatlán had ample contact with their Peruvian Counterparts, and therefore the art collection.

No rooms at the Melville are alike. In one you sit on a majestic deep plush armchair, In another hangs a splendid oil painting. Here you find costly antiques, gleaming mirrors, decrepit trunks and Mexican chandeliers. All of this makes The Melville perhaps Mexico 's loveliest habitable museum.

A Magical View

When we lived in Mazatlán during the winter months, the view from the terrace both day and night was spectacular. Watching the cruise ships arrive in the morning and then depart at night, sitting in a chair either under the sun or enjoying the cool night air was very enjoyable.
