Visiting a country different than one's own is filled with all kinds of surprises, both large and small. I've discovered a very different mail system here in Mazatlan. There are virtually NO public mailboxes and few private ones--at least that I have been able to find. I had to hunt for one on the main post office in El Centro and another posted on a fence by a restaurant in Plaza Machado I found two other private mail slots to photograph, but there are more of those: one on a restaurant gate and one on a garage at a private home. There are no mail drops on the street; mail delivered to my apartment complex is just tossed on the floor of the main foyer. One adjusts, however, whereever one travels!!

Not a 'red' mailbox. Good one Kate!

Do you have any idea as to why there are very few public mailboxes? Interesting to read your commentary.

a blue one and interesting tale of how the system operates.

One looks like it is ready to escape...

Maybe they don't want people to write and complain about the lack of postal facilities....

Not red, but very Mexican!

Glad you found it, Kate. That eagle insignia looks almost American!

So, it was a real challenge for you, Kate, to find this nice one! Bravo et bon dimanche au soleil!

Interesting - all the wondrous colours of Mexico and a discreet mailbox. Well I think that's wonderful! The Mexicans obviously have their priorities right - life first, with all it's colour, and mail very much a second thought.

Where do you post outgoing mail? Do you need to take it to the post office?

The best thing about the DP blogs is that it's not just the photo that is interesting but the stories behind them. This one inparticular.

that's a very interesting way of a mail system.
love your post today Kate.

You have come up with an interesting one. Perhaps its like a few places I know of where we collected mail from the post office, no deliveries at all.

It looks like very hard to find in that colour. Thanks for finding this for DP.

I took my mail to the central post office, got stamps, and gave it to the clerk; can't imagine sending it any other way. My family and friends correspond with me either through email or Skype. Vonnage works, too. Today I'll ask my Mexican landlord, who is a very successful businessman, how the family sends and receives their mail. That should answer our questions.

I totally missed the mailbox theme. I guess I am missing them or the notices.

I did a kind of segment on how to create a backyard wildlife habitat and it is at Brookville Daily Photo and it contains a lot of information that may upset some folks. Not sure if you are interested or not.

I'm interested to hear what your landlord will say...
The box is very subdued...for Mazatlan ;-)

Interesting. I like the eagle - our postal logo is a reindeer, for some weird reason.

Nice color.

How interesting! We do take things for granted sometimes.

Hope you received all your mails since moving to Mexico.

Thanks for your comments. A blue post box is a bit unusual, but interesting.

this one gave you quite the challenge.

Nice shot and no wonder I've never received a Post Card from Mexico (smile)

Thank goodness for eMAIL!

I was also interested to hear of the unusual mail situation. Friends had told me they visit their parents they have to go to another town to pick up their mail...and to think I have complained when my mailman was an hour later than ususal.
