Quinceañeras, which celebrates the 15th birthday for girls, is a rite of passage. This young woman posed for me just before she and her family and friends entered the Cathedral in El Centro to begin the celebration. Perfect for Valentine's Day as an expression of love and life!!

They wear gorgeous dresses and dance a waltz with her father. Then everybody celebrates till late at night. I used to see some girls in Cuba riding in old American cars or in carriages on the way to the party (they have a long photo session first). I like to see illusion in their faces.

I'm so glad that my daughters are 5 and 2! It will be a while before I have to deal with stuff like this. It's going to be really hard for me.

She looks a lot older than 15 but then again, most kids today do.

Oy, I sound like an old man.

The last Quincenerras I was at was held at Our Lady of Guadalupe down on Concord Street in St Paul quite a few years ago.

Kate, now that you're back home (and not posting for a bit?), you should rent the movie "Quinceañera." It's out on DVD now and is a lovely story about quinceaneras, family, and love. (Pretty sure you can find it at Blockbuster and/or netflix.)
